Consumer Unit Upgrade FAQs
How long does a consumer unit upgrade take?
Most consumer unit upgrades are completed within a single day, typically 4–6 hours. We test and certify the installation before we leave.
Do I need to have my consumer unit upgraded?
If your fuse board still uses rewirable fuses, has no RCD protection, or is over 15 years old, we strongly recommend an upgrade for safety and compliance with current regulations.
Will I need to turn off my electricity?
Yes, the power will need to be off during the upgrade. We work efficiently to minimise the time without power, and we always let you know the expected duration in advance.
What is an SPD and do I need one?
A Surge Protection Device (SPD) protects your electrical equipment from power surges. Since January 2019, SPDs are required in most new consumer unit installations under BS 7671 Amendment 2.
